Amazing Cake Contest
Hey there everyone! I know that Howrse has opened a new contest for their Sweet Treats promotion. It was opened a while ago, but I just finished my entry today, SO, I decided to make a little recipe guide for it!
Ingredients
3 boxes of cake mix (white cake mix, any brand)
4 cans of cake icing (white icing, any brand)
Eggs
Water
Oil
eggs, water, and oil were the ingredients called for from my out of the box cake mix. you may need to alter this. follow the instructions on the back of the mix.
Food coloring (red, yellow, blue, *optional*; green, pink, purple)
*optional items*
icing food coloring
piping bags
sprinkles
extra pan (the same size as your previous pan, to cook two layers at once)
items you'll need
Round cake pan
Measuring Cup
Icing Knives
Plate to put your cake on
Knife to cut off the tops of the cakes so they don't stick up
directions
Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit (about 148 celsius)
Mix up all three boxes of cake mix (following directions on box)
Divide the mix into six different bowls (1.5 cup in each bowl)
Put food coloring in the bowls to your liking (for the rainbow effect, use red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple)
Take the round cake pan and coat it with grease (I use lard and a brush)
Put about a cup of flour in the pan and shake it around so it coats the grease
Shake out the excess flour. Hit the bottom and sides of the pan to get all the extra out. Do not use your fingers to brush out or smooth out.
Put the color in that you will want for your bottom layer. if you are doing two layers at a time, but the bottom and the second layer in
Put your first (and second if doing both at once) cake in the oven.
Set the timer for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, change the oven temperature to 325 Fahrenheit (about 162 celsius) and then set another timer for 10 minutes. After that timer goes off, raise the oven temperature to 350 fahrenheit (about 176 celsius)
check the cake frequently, sticking a toothpick into the center. when it comes out clean, pull it out of the oven. the tops of the cake will be a bit brown, that's okay. (the orange and purple layers may look especially brown on the outside)
Take the cakes out once they're done and take a knife and run it along the inside edge of the pan
put a plate on top of the pan and flip it upside down (this will put the cake on the plate without running risk of it crumbling)
put another plate on top of the cake and flip it upside down again (the cake will end on the second plate, and will be right side up)
If needed, cut the top of the cake off to make a flat surface.
Let the layer cool. While it is cooling, turn the oven temperature back down to 300 fahrenheit (148 celsius) you can leave the oven door open in order to cool it down faster
Once the layer is cool, spread a thin layer of icing all over the top of it.
Repeat those steps for the remaining layers.
Cover the cake in white frosting and decorate as you please!
I used a cake decorating book to get ideas for my icing on the outside. The sides were done with a flat nozzle on a piping bag and the bottom and top borders were done with a star nozzle on a piping bag. The icing was all white, the blue was colored with a few teeny drops of royal blue icing dye. The pearls on the criss-cross areas are edible pearl sprinkles, which were put on individually using tweezers.
And, of course, I couldn't have done *any* of this without the help of my good friend Cassie. (: And my loving second momma, Laura.
